Bioscience Skills and Careers Postdoctoral Researcher Subgroup

We recognise the need to support postdoctoral researchers in academia or elsewhere to maximise their research effectiveness and individual potential.

The Bioscience Skills and Careers Strategy Advisory Panel (BSC) (see related links) has a Postdoctoral Researcher Subgroup to focus on issues related to postdoctoral researcher (postdoc) careers and development, and to advise on implementation of our Vision for postdoctoral researchers.

The subgroup provides advice on a range of issues relating to postdoctoral researcher careers, training, and development. These issues and the role of the subgroup are set out in the below Terms of Reference:

The subgroup will provide advice regarding:

  1. How BBSRC can support the independence and effective career planning and development of postdoctoral researchers.
  2. How BBSRC can determine and demonstrate the range of long-term impacts that postdoctoral researchers have and the outcomes of their training and development.
  3. How BBSRC can best engage with its postdoctoral community and for what purpose.

In providing advice on the above issues, the subgroup will:

  • provide thoughts and opinions regarding issues on which the Bioscience Skills and Careers Strategy Advisory Panel may request input
  • advise on, and where relevant take ownership of, policies that will implement and embed the BBSRC Vision for Postdoctoral Researchers into the career planning and support of postdoctoral researchers
  • help strengthen the supply of highly skilled people to research and research-related careers
  • seek information from the wider postdoctoral community, including via the BBSRC postdoctoral researchers LinkedIn group (see external links) and through member’s professional networks
  • have a balance of new and established members
  • meet twice per year. Meetings will be held on a single day and be scheduled at least two months in advance to enable widespread participation.

The subgroup aims to have approximately ten members (including the Chair and a Deputy Chair who is a member of BSC), which will aim to include approximately four postdocs based in academia and four based in industry or who have extensive industry experience. Members based in academia should be working on BBSRC-funded projects, while those in industry should be working for a company with which BBSRC has an established relationship, and/or who were supported by BBSRC during their PhD.

Across the subgroup as a whole the following experience is included:

  • of working as a BBSRC-funded postdoctoral researcher in an academic environment
  • of working in an industry environment
  • of supporting the professional development of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers
  • of communicating the impact of research
  • of engaging with both researchers and the wider scientific community (e.g. policy makers, funders, science communicators, those supporting innovation etc.)
  • of researching scientific topics across the breadth of BBSRC remit.

Current members of the Subgroup are:

Dr Liz Elvidge (Chair) - Imperial College London
Dr Karen Liu (Deputy Chair) - King's College London
Dr James Allen - University College London
Dr Tegan Darch - Rothamsted Research
Dr Emma Duncan - Babraham Institute
Dr Christopher Hepworth - The University of Sheffield
Dr Sarah Lee - University of Birmingham
Dr Emily Linnane - AstraZeneca
Dr Laura Rapley - GlaxoSmithKline
Dr Andrea Domenico Rivera - University of Portsmouth
Dr Prerna Vohra - The Roslin Institute
